Antioxidants are nutrients that play an essential role in protecting the body from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Free radical reactions occur as a part of normal body metabolism but, when present in excess, they can cause damage to cells and tissues. Oxidative stress also occurs when the body is exposed to environmental toxins, cigarette smoke and pollutants.
Free radicals are neutralised by antioxidants which donate an electron to the unstable molecule. Many antioxidants are produced naturally in the body while many others occur in foods. Good dietary sources of antioxidants include fresh organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
Increased exposure to environmental pollutants, poor quality food and stressful lifestyles can increase levels of free radicals and so it is important to ensure sufficient antioxidants in the diet. Supplementing with antioxidants can help ensure dietary levels, giving the body extra support.
